The retroplay continues with 27... f6xRg5 opening the cage; the officers are extracted (except the black king), and the next uncapture is f2xBe3 allowing retraction of e7-e6, after [Rh8] and [Bf8] have come home. So the answer to the stipulation question is a2-a3, not a7-a6. (2010-4-23) Mario Richter: Lösungsangabe im Sinne von Hans und Henrik korrigiert. (2010-4-23) Thomas Volet: Yes. I never looked at the database solution, but as I recall, the solution was a2-a3. (2010-8-10) comment

The only legal black last move seems to be e6xQd5, but how does the retroplay continue? (2010-8-17) Henrik Juel: Before we start looking for the retroplay, we might entertain the notion that the diagram or stipulation is wrong; I base this suspicion on the fact that the forward stipulation (with White to move) has lots of solutions. | | hj: In English the stipulation is something like 'Black has lifted a man from a2 to move it. Complete the move!' The last part gives the show away: 0... La2-b1, because only a bishop has a unique move. The previous retroplay was -1.Sg1 Lb1 -2.Sh3 Lc2 ... -7.Sg1 Lh1 -8.Sh3 L=h2 -9.Sg1 h3 -10.b4 h4 -11.Sh3 h5 -12.h4xSg5 Sh7 -13.Sg1 etc. Black needs to add an officer to be unpromoted on h1; but DTS fail because of retroopposition on h3. A reformulated stipulation might be 'Black to move. Add a man on a2.' (2005-4-25) Nikolai Beluhov: Standard-set version by D. Baibikov (Shakhmatnaya Kompozitsiya 57/2004, p. 61, problem N360): A. | | Henrik Juel: The wB's fell on c6 and c1, the bB's on h3 and e7. Orig. Mao b8 made at least 10 moves, incl. a switch-back and a round-trip: b8-d7-b8, then a6, then b4-a2xc1-e2-f4-d5-b4, where it was captured. You may find an analysis on the RetroCorner, http://janko.at/Retros/ FIDE/G671sol.htm (2003-4-10) hj: For those who want to know: A Mao moves like a knight, but only if the orthogonal square is empty. Me7 may move to c8 via d7, or to f5 via e6, but not to g8 because f7 is occupied. With many men on the board, the Mao is a very weak man. (13+10) a) Wo wurden die fehlenden Steine geschlagen? b) Welches war der erste Zug des sK? Gitterschach
| | paul: Solution: wKB was captured at home. The wK could only reach g1 through O-O. Black did just play Qb1xd1+. The wR now on a2 could only reach a2 from higher up on the a-file. Which requires cross-captures a2xb3 and b2xa3, in that order. Thus the sequence has been wNb3-a1, then wPa2xb3, then wRa-a2, then wPb2xa3, then wBc1-b2. The actual wRa2 must be a promotee (can't be wKR after O-O) and the original wRa1 has been captured on its home square. Then the wKR has just been taken on d1. The promoted R requires the sequence wPh2-h4xg5xf6xe7xd8=R. This (and the a-b cross-captures) account for all missing black units, so that the bPe7 is part of these captures, and has been taken on e7, forcing the g5 and f6 captures to be bl. Knights. The bQB is white-squared and has been taken on b3. The bK was not on e8 when e7xd8=R occurred. He could only have escaped e8 with O-O-O (hence his first move !) because square e7 and bBf8 had never been free before. So that the bQR was taken on d8 and the bKR on a3. (2010-8-29) comment

Preis" seems to relate to diagrammes 1989 - in Problemist 1995 this problem was reprinted?! (2010-8-9) Harry Fougiaxis: This is a good chance (even if perhaps not the right place!) to ask the PDB admin team why the reprints/quotes are listed above the diagram, together with the source. Imho, this is a quite bad practice and it can create a lot of confusion. (2010-8-10) Gerd Wilts: Personally I like it very much to see the reprints directly above the diagram. Maybe a compromise would be to hide reprints by default and display them only after a click on a 'more...' link, as for hidden comments? (2010-8-17) Henrik Juel: I like that idea for a compromise, Gerd. (2010-8-17) comment

Bf4 -17.a5 Be3 -18.a4 Bc5 -19.a3 Bf8 -20.a2 e7 -21.e6:S etc. Another interesting problem by the gifted author. (2003-6-6) Nikolai Beluhov: Here is one short sketch of a "proof" that this is the only last move that works. Consider the structure formed by the pieces occupying g8, h8, f7, g7, h7, e6, f6, g6, h6, and g5, together with the bK oscillating on g4 and h4. Until some Bishop returns to its home square, this structure will remain stable (i.e., the bK will be confined to g4 and h4, and none of the other pieces will be able to move). It is easy to see now that the black dark-squared Bishop must be the first one to return to its home square. Retracting d6:e5 too early would either interfere with the black light-squared Bishop (if the black dark-squared Bishop was to return via d6) or with the black Queen's Rook (if the black dark-squared Bishop was to return via b6). And so, the bPe5 can be considered to be a part of the cage. This means that the bB uncaptured on f4 or g3 by the white pawns could only exit via e3. It follows that we must retract wPf3-f4 at some point. This forces the release pattern wPh2-h4; wPf2:Bg3; bK to h4; wPf3-f4; bB to f8; etc. But of course we also need not to retrostalemate White in the last phase, and this finally hints us to the retroplay given by Henrik Juel in the previous comment. With an oscillating knight the position can be reached in 19.0 moves, but the stipulation is 19,5 moves. After the introductory 3 moves White therefore has to make an odd number of waiting moves, which a knight can?t do (parity). So White has to perform a carefully orchestrated king triangulation.
